Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz which ranges from a light lavender or pale violet, to a deep purple. A semiprecious stone, it is the traditional birthstone for February.
The Greeks believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle in the belief that amethysts heal people and keep them cool-headed. It is said to provide emotional support in the form of confidence and calmness.
